Cough Elixir

I’ve learned to keep all of these ingredients on hand at all times just in case a throat tickle or cough sneaks up in our home. No one likes to be caught in the middle of the night with a cough or a sick kiddo and limited options for relief. This concoction has made such a difference not just for my family, but for so many of you too! I’ve found it many times more effective than store bought cough syrups for calming a cough and it’s also full of so many healing foods to help shorten the duration of a cough.

We’ve got a couple people battling coughs here and it was keeping us all up last night. I jumped out of bed at 1am and whipped this up and the incessant and painful coughing just stopped. Another sip a couple hours later when the coughs started to threaten again, shut them right back up. I was honestly amazed how well it worked. I’m saving this here for you and for me too. I made a little adjustment to my normal blend last night and it worked even better than before. Here ya go!

2 cups organic pineapple (fresh or frozen is best. Canned and bottled is usually pasteurized and won’t have the bromelain. I keep frozen chunks stocked at all times)🍍
Juice of 2 lemons 🍋
1 cup raw organic honey 🍯
1 inch of raw organic ginger peeled and finely grated
1/2 cup organic olive oil
Pinch of cayenne
Small pinch of salt (optional)

Pop in the blender until well combined. I grate the ginger or pour ours through a strainer because the kids don’t love ginger fibers. Sip as needed. We do about an ounce at a time. Store in the refrigerator for a few days or up to a week. Try freezing any extra as a popsicle for sore throat relief or even in gummy molds for a little cold lozenge.

Pineapple: High in bromelain. An anti inflammatory enzyme, meaning it can reduce pain, combat infection, kill some bacteria, and speed up recovery. Some report pineapple to be up to 500% more effective at suppressing coughs than over the counter syrups.

Lemon: antiviral and antibacterial properties. Contains electrolytes.Good source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Both aid in fighting infection.

Raw Honey: anti-allergenic/viral/bacterial/fungal. Good source of minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes. Coats and soothes a sore throat.

Ginger: anti inflammatory, pain reducer, immune support, anti-oxidant, combats infection.

Olive oil: lubricates and coats the throat to help soothe and treat a cough. Has anti inflammatory properties as well.

Cayenne: anti inflammatory and helps relive pain. Beta carotene and antioxidants help combat infection. Capsaicin helps break up and move congested mucus.

Salt: electrolyte source to help with hydration. May aid in reducing sore throat pain.
