Mattress Improvement Tips

We spend around 1/3 of our lives in bed. For most people, the majority of time spent in the home is spent right here.

Lots to say about this space but for right now I want to focus on just the actual bed. Specifically the mattress. But not replacing the whole mattress. More on that another time. Or see my mattress highlight for our choice there. I’ll talk more about materials and options a different time. This post is a general tip for making your current bed #alittlelesstoxic

✨ 4 quick things you can do to make the mattress you have #alittlelesstoxic✨

1: Waterproof Mattress Protector. Spills, accidents, sweat, and more can penetrate the surface of your mattress and lead to growth of harmful bacteria and mold that you will then be breathing in 1/3 of your life. Protect the mattress you have. Also, a protector will help keep dead skin cells, dust mites and their feces and dander, and other gross stuff from polluting your sleep space. You can remove the protector and wash it which will protect your mattress and help you. This can help with allergies and so much more. Most any that are waterproof are going to have a thin layer of TPU or similar and I’m okay with that for these reasons. I still found some that are ALLT. Avocado has a great one. I have another linked in my amazon faves. If a brand doesn’t list what exact material makes theirs waterproof, that’s suspicious. I ask for transparency or shop elsewhere.

2: An ALLT mattress pad can put some distance between you and the current mattress if that’s of any concern. It can also provide additional support while making the surface you sleep on a healthier environment. Some materials I’d look for would include wool, organic cotton, and natural latex.

3: Natural fiber bedding. I love flax, organic cotton and everything @simplyorganicbamboo makes.

4: Wash the protector and bedding regularly. This will help remove dust mites and their feces and dander, dead skin cells, sweat, and other matter that contributes to indoor air pollution and will benefit your sleep and health.
