One Foot in Front of the Other

I want you to try something. Stand up and take the biggest step you can take. Then slide that front foot out a little further … Take notice of how you feel. A bit unstable. Easy to knock down. Possibly even injured and unable to take another step.

Taking the biggest steps possible toward good might seem noble, or even necessary, but will soon wear us out. Will cause us to stumble. Will leave us vulnerable to that which might want to knock us down. Will eventually immobilize us. Will render us less effective.

We don’t need to take the biggest step. We need to take the next best step.

As we all journey forward
Toward truth.
Toward ridding ourselves of all that is toxic.
Toward freedom.
Toward love.
Toward justice.
Toward peace.
We must take steps we can manage. We must take steps we can sustain. We must be able to continue moving forward. Your steps won’t look just like anyone else’s. They will not always be the same rate or distance.

They will be your own steps. You will move forward. One foot in front of the other.

Do what you can with what you’re able as it makes sense for you SO THAT you can keep going.

Stand up. Take a step forward. Keep going.

One foot in front of the other. Repeat.
